Tear Drainage Reconstruction is performed when the ducts responsible for allowing tears to drain become clogged as a result of surgical interventions, post traumatic tear-tube seizures.
Why does the tear canal serve?
The tear canal – is a natural physiological pump through which excessive tears come out of the eye.
What happens when the tear canal is missing or is blocked?
Tears are a physiological fluid and its flora is a living environment against pathogenic bacteria that causes diseases. If tears cannot drain from the eye properly chronic eye inflammation (conjunctivitis, keratitis, uveitis) develop.
Why a Tear Drainage Reconstruction is needed?
The intervention is needed to restore the tear drainage system and may involve opening the punctum (punctoplasty), repairing the canaliculus, or diverting tears from the lacrimal sac into the nose through a new passageway tear movement through an artificial canal. To repair the canaliculus a silicone or titanium is used. This operation provides the opportunity to prevent chronic inflammatory processes and to restore the natural movement of the tear.
